Le Maire said it was not clear whether the project would result in a new hyperscaler within some of the member companies and he dismissed competition woes by explaining that the Gaia-X should not be seen as a competitor to existing providers as the growth of data storage needs in the coming years and decades will “allow several companies to prosper”.
He stressed that “we are not China, we are not the United States – we are European countries with our own values and our own economic interests that we want to defend”. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Bruno Le Maire said Gaia-X “will ensure the application of policy rules based on EU values and standards”. The joint project, which has been described by the German Minister for Economy Peter Altmaier “the most important digital aspiration of Europe in a generation”, aims to create European Cloud infrastructure to rival U.S. The latest development came after Germany announced in October last year that it would partner with France to champion a European Cloud ecosystem that promises to deliver an interoperable data exchange between a range of sectors. Gaia-X will create a joint standard of APIs and data sovereignty rules for companies aiming to store data on the cloud within the EU. The platform will connect cloud-hosting services from various companies to allow businesses to freely move their decentralised data in a reliable and secure way under robust EU data protection rules.
The legal entity managing Gaia-X, a cloud infrastructure platform being developed by 22 French and German companies, was registered in Belgium on Thursday 4 June.
